Vad håller vi på med egentligen? / What are we planning?

Med det här inlägget vill jag försöka ge ett svar på den frågan som ju nu måste vara på alla eras läppar: ”Vad är det ni planerar att göra egentligen?”

In this post I will try to answer the question that must be in everyone’s mind right now: ”What are you guys actually planning to do?”
Well...
... we plan to move to the capital of Rwanda, Kigali, and live there for a year. At least that is what we aim for. I guess we will have to see exactly how long we end up staying, but the idea is that we will move there and stay there for approximately one year. We haven’t really made up our minds about what we actually want to do while living there - perhaps we will do some voluntary work and probably try to find some job that can make us a bit of money. I guess that we will try to find a good balance between working and having time to experience the culture and the city.
... we plan to save enough money, before we move, so that it can cover the cost of living in Kigali for a year. So even if we don’t find any job, or run into some kind of issues with working permits or whatever we can still live there for a year. Ideally we would do some part time freelance work in order for the budget to be as sustainable as possible.
... we plan to apply for visas. That in it self doesn’t seem to be that much of an issue. As far as I understand, you basically apply for a 30 day tourist visa when you enter the country. After 30 days the tourist visa can be extended for another 90 days, and then again be extended for 90 days and so on. But as I said we also want to work, so...
... we plan to apply to get work permits. At least if we find some jobs I guess. The Rwandan migration authority (or however they are named) provides a list of occupations on demand, where you can see, well, what occupations are on demand! It seems that if you get employment in any of those fields it will be easy to get a work permit. If you plan on getting any other job it seems a bit trickier... Can get a work permit do so some freelance work? Hmm, I will need to do some more research!
... we do not plan for a sabbatical. Not one of those travel-around-the-world-after-graduation-sabbaticals at least. We are rather seeking the experience of living an ordinary life in a completely different culture. We don’t want to be tourists. We want to move.
... we plan to move within two years (probably in the summer of 2020).
So this was a bit of what we plan on doing. In future posts we will cover a bit more of the hows and whys. Any comment that you might have regarding these thoughts are very welcome. Maybe you have some tips regarding applying for visas/work permits or maybe you have a comment regarding something completely diffferent? Whatever the case, please get in touch!

... vi planerar att innan flytten spara ihop såpass mycket pengar som vi uppskattar att det krävs för att kunna bo i Kigali i ett år, så att vi klarar oss utan att jobba om det blir så att vi inte hittar nåt jobb eller att det krånglar med arbetstillstånd eller dylikt. Helst vill vi kunna frilansa lite lagom mycket, jobba några dagar i månaden för att få in lite pengar som kan göra budgeten så ”självförsörjande” som möjligt.
... vi planerar att flytta till Rwandas huvudstad Kigali och bo där i ett år. Det är i alla fall utgångspunkten. Vi får väl se när det närmar sig, och när vi väl bor där, exakt hur länge det blir att vi stannar och så, men grundidén är att vi ska flytta dit för att bo där i ungefär ett år. Vi har ingen riktigt klar bild av vad vi vill göra när vi bor där - kanske kommer vi att volontärarbeta lite grann, kanske försöker vi hitta något annat jobb som vi kan tjäna lite pengar på. Men antagligen kommer vi att vilja hitta en bekväm balans mellan att jobba och att upptäcka staden och landet.

... vi planerar att söka visum, vilket i sig nog inte blir så svårt. Så vitt jag har förstått det så söker man först ett turistvisum för 30 dagar, som man sedan kan förlänga med 90 dagar och sedan förhoppningsvis vidare kan förlänga med ytterligare 90 dagar osv. Men som finns att läsa ovan så vill vi ju kanske jobba lite också, så...
... vi planerar att söka arbetstillstånd. I alla fall om vi hittar nåt att arbeta med. Nån myndighet (typ migrationsverket) i Rwanda har en lista med yrken som landet behöver, och får man anställning inom ett av de yrkena så verkar det rätt så lätt att få arbetstillstånd. Vill man jobba som något annat verkar det lite klurigare. Hur funkar det att frilansa? Måste researcha mer!
... vi planerar inte ett ”sabbatsår” efter studenten eller liknande, utan vi vill göra det lite mer nyanserat än så. Snarare är tanken att vi vill pröva hur det är att bo i en helt annan kultur, leva ett vanligt liv där och se vilka erfarenheter det kan ge. Vi vill inte resa runt som turister och ”se saker”, vi vill flytta.
